Government seeks for
help from stakeholders in the competition act enforcement

Government has asked for help from
stakeholders in the effective enforcement of the
Competition and Consumer Protection Act of 2010.
Commerce, Trade and Industry Deputy
Minister, Lwipa Puma says there is need for stakeholders
to complement on the efforts being made by the Competition
and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC).
Officiating at a stakeholder capacity
building workshop for effective implementation of the new
competition and consumer protection act, Dr. Puma
highlighted the need for a healthy competition culture.
He however noted the lack of awareness
among consumers as being a hindrance in effective consumer
protection.
Dr. Puma further bemoaned the absence
of partnerships between government and Civil Society
Organizations.
The one day workshop has attracted
participation of stakeholders from various organizations
including COMESA, and the academics.
And speaking earlier CUTS International
Zambia Board Chairperson Love Mtesa said lack of education
on the law has contributed to the ineffective of the law.
Mr. Mtesa said the workshop is aimed at
looking at other forms of hindrances in effective
implementation of the law.
And speaking at the same occasion,
COMESA Director Competition George Lipimile said
competition is cardinal in regional integration.
Mr. Lipimile added that an effective
consumer law forces players to ensure a level playing
field for all stakeholders.
