National Environment Awareness Campaign (NEAC)

Consumer Unity & Trust Society (CUTS), Jaipur is performing as the Regional Resource Agency (RRA) for Rajasthan under the National Environment Awareness Campaign (NEAC) of the Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India, since 2006. Within the CUTS family, CUTS Centre fro Consumer Action, Research & Training (CUTS CART) is entrusted with the responsibility to perform as the RRA.

NEAC is the flagship campaign of the Ministry with the objective of creating environmental awareness at the national level. The Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India organizes the NEAC every year since 1986. Thirty-four organizations located in different parts of the country have been designated as Regional Resource Agencies (RRAs) for assisting the Ministry in conducting and coordinating this Campaign.

Several non-governmental organizations, educational and training institutions, professional associations, scientific bodies, community organizations and also a whole range of other agencies participate in the campaign. These bodies singularly or in partnership with other organizations, organize programmes for creating environmental awareness followed by field action at the local, regional and national level.

In view of the wide range of inter-related environmental problems facing the country, the activities of the Campaign is focusing on environmental issues and problems relating to the theme. Emphasis is given for devising concrete, action-oriented activities on the issue/problem identified at the local level. The Campaign is being planned and overseen by the Ministry of Environment & Forests. The decentralized mechanism adopted for conducting this Campaign, since 1993 is being continued this year too.

‘Solid Waste Management’ was the theme for the campaign for the year 2006-07. During 2007-08, ‘Bio-diversity Conservation’ was the theme for the campaign. ‘Climate Change’ was the theme for two consecutive years, i.e. 2008-09 & 2009-10. During 2010-11, the theme is again ‘Bio-diversity conservation’.
