Expected Outcomes

Besides a book with a CD, the following would be the outcomes of the project.

  • Trade negotiators and trade policy officials from five South Asian countries will be better equipped to negotiate during the Doha Round for the benefit of the poor, with a special focus on women, with inputs from the ground/grassroots.

  • The five South Asian countries – and also the G-20 and the mini-ministerial – will submit and release papers, non-papers and press releases that voice recommendations for the WTO declaration (to be adopted at the Hong Kong ministerial) that are pro-poor, with a special focus on women.

  • Through action-research (civil society’s involvement in the process of conducting research) an informal forum of state (trade policy officials and trade negotiators) and non-state (NGOs, trade unions, research institutions, WTO experts, business bodies) actors will be in place. This forum will help different actors to interact with each other on trade-related issues.

  • Through achieving the outcomes CUTS would contribute to develop CSO’s understanding and knowledge on trade issues. It will result in a model of involving civil society organizations in the process of trade negotiations.
