Stress on removing consumer apathy

Lauding the exemplary role of NGOs in inculcating consumer awareness and proposing to augment the consumer grievance redressal machinery, Navin Chawla, Secretary, MOCA (Ministry of Consumer Affairs), released a book titled Is It Really Safe? at a function organised by CUTS, a premier consumer rights organisation.

Hailing the efforts of CUTS in generating awareness on consumer safety issues, noted transport safety expert and Henry Ford Professor for Transportation Safety at IIT, Dinesh Mohan….

CUTS On GOI Environment Panel

The Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India, has invited CUTS as a member to the Core Group on Sustainable Development.

The group has been constituted under the chairmanship of Secretary, Environment and Forests to prepare India’s positions on CSD-12, which will be meeting in New York in April. CUTS has been invited to the panel for its specialised experience in the area of sustainable consumption.

The Core Group will advise the Ministry on:

§         Preparation of the future roadmap for sustainable development issues

§         Developing a long-term perspective on international negotiations on sustainable development

* Afro-Asian Civil Society Seminar

From Cancun To Sao Paulo: The Role Of Civil Society In The International Trading System

New Delhi, India, April 13-15, 2004

Over 150 participants from Africa and Asia (including the Pacific region) representing the civil society, inter-governmental agencies, government institutions, academia, media, and donor agencies will gather in New Delhi for discussions on taking the Doha Development Agenda forward. Four workshops will be organised to present case studies on micro aspects of linkages between the international trading system and national development strategies.

Plenary Sessions

Day One, 1700-1900: Inaugural

Day Two, 0900-1100, Plenary I: Assuring developmental gains from international trading system and trade negotiations

1430-1630, Plenary II: Does the international trading system promote the interests of the poor?

Day Three, 0900-1100, Plenary III: Building and strengthening capacity in trade policy

1130-1330, Plenary IV: The role of UNCTAD in assisting national trade and development strategies

* World Health Day 2004: Road Safety is No Accident

Kolkata & Jaipur, April 7, 2004

World Health Day 2004 is dedicated to road safety; it will focus on road injuries and preventive measures. CUTS will celebrate the day with a panel discussion on road safety at both Jaipur and Kolkata. The objective of this panel discussion is to work out some concrete recommendations that can feed into policy.

§   CUTS-CART Workshop on Long-Term Management and Supply of Water

Jaipur, March 20, 2004

Proper management of water resources and community partnership can solve the water crisis in a desert state like Rajasthan. These and other recommendations for the conservation and supply of water were the outcomes of the workshop organised jointly by CUTS Centre for Consumer Action, Research & Training and World Bank South Asia Water and Cleanliness Programme.

§   CUTS-CART Workshop on Power Reforms

Jaipur, March 18-19, 2004

The two-day workshop, organised by CUTS-CART and German political foundation, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) evaluated a 2-year programme of increasing consumer participation in power sector reforms. It focussed on issues linked to making power sector reforms more consumer friendly, increasing public participation and accelerating the process.

Playing With Toys or Life?

A toy is a child's best friend. Be it a doll, a stuffed animal or a WWF warrior; children and their playthings are inseparable. But unfortunately toys are not without their hazards. CUTS is working on recommendations with a view to use as advocacy tools to persuade Bureau of Indian Standards in making standards for toys mandatory.
